Who needs to comply with PEAL requirements?

If you handle food that contains any of the major allergens, PEAL applies to you.

What allergens need to be declared under PEAL?

The major allergens that must be declared in plain English include: peanuts, tree nuts (with specific nut named), milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, soy, wheat, sesame, lupin, and sulphites (when present above 10mg/kg). Each must be declared using its common, everyday name.

What does “per-site licensing” mean?

Each PEAL Compliant licence covers one physical business location or one online store. If you operate a bakery in Gosford and another in Newcastle, you’d need two licences. This keeps pricing fair — a single-site café pays the same as any other single-site business. Multi-site operators can contact us for volume pricing.

Absolutely. The DIY Compliance Kit was specifically designed for small to medium food businesses. You don’t need a food science degree or a compliance team. With the DIY Kit, most businesses can update their labels within 1–2 weeks. The Done-With-You Audit delivers results within 5 business days. The Done-For-You service typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on the number of SKUs. The sooner you start, the sooner you’re protected.

Do I need to update labels for every single product?

Accepted Answer

Yes — every packaged food product that contains or may contain a major allergen needs to comply with PEAL requirements. This includes updating ingredient lists, “Contains” statements, and any precautionary allergen statements.

What if I sell non-packaged food (café, restaurant, catering)?

Accepted Answer

Non-packaged food businesses must still be able to provide allergen information to customers upon request. Our Food Service Allergen Communication Templates (included in all tiers) give you ready-to-use allergen menus, staff training checklists, and customer communication tools.

Health Star Ratings are becoming mandatory — what does that mean for me?

Health Star Ratings (HSR) are the next major labelling change hitting Australian food businesses. When mandatory HSR requirements take effect, every packaged food product will need a compliant Health Star Rating on the front of pack. Our upcoming subscription service ($29/month) will cover HSR compliance alongside PEAL — keeping you ahead of every regulatory shift. All current customers get priority access.
